This song began as a mostly acoustic demo by my frequent collaborator Ariana Kelly called “Beginning Of The End.” She had shared this track with me last year and I instantly fell in love. After some time, I asked for permission to steal its musical skeleton to build upon and was so graciously gifted my request.
Adherent to my latest obsession with trip hop, I ultimately wanted to mimic alternative music circa 1992: a unique moment when new wave artists began darkening their sound in response to the rise of grunge and shamelessly appropriating hip hop beats was all the rage. Notable influences for this track include Duran Duran’s “Come Undone” as well as Depeche Mode’s “Walking In My Shoes,” which the main drum loop was borrowed from (originally sampled from “Language Of Violence” by Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy).
The words are sort of about lusting over the return/arrival of something long awaited and whether or not we can control when this occurs, which very much reflects the completion of this track. Are we as mortals bounded by fate or do we have an active hand in the creation of our own destiny? Whatever the case may be, your ultimate karma is neither wrath nor punishment. It just is.
lyrics
[Intro: Ryder Houston]
Qu'est-ce que c'est?
Quel est ce son?
Chevauchant le vent
L'entendez-vous?
Bien sûr que oui
Il a toujours été là
Il sera toujours là
Pour toujours
Et toujours
Toujours
[Refrain: Voix in the Dark]
Tower of power, the rhythm of the hour
T-t-tower of power, tower —
Hear my prayer, run your fingers through my hair
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done like…
[Verse 1: Ryder Houston]
Sitting there, I wonder just why
This earthly poetry is binded and confined
It's just so terminal, it's oh-so-comfortable
Just sitting silent in the bondage of my mind
[Refrain: Voix in the Dark & Ryder Houston]
Tower of power, the rhythm of the hour
(Bondage of my mind)
Hear my prayer, run your fingers through my hair
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done like…
[Pre-Chorus: Ryder Houston]
Come on, guy, there's somethin' right
Somethin' 'bout the way you wanna ride
It's such a fine line
You never learn, it's so divine
Caught up on the way you wear your hair
And your face in this lighting
Take a little look at me right now
Take a little piece of me right now
I’ll be yours forever and ever and ever
[Chorus 1: Ryder Houston]
To each his own, it's a parade, a shade of stone
Neither wrath nor punishment
Every man to each his own, a parade, a shade of stone
Neither wrath nor punishment
[Verse 2: Ryder Houston]
Dare I say I discovered just why
This higher prophecy's decided by design?
It's inexplicable, incomprehensible
Yet, so undeniable, this music lost in my mind
[Refrain: Voix in the Dark & Ryder Houston]
Tower of power, the rhythm of the hour
(Music lost in my mind)
Hear my prayer, run your fingers through my hair
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done like…
[Bridge: Voix in the Dark]
Breeze through the corridor (breeze), keys to the orator (orator)
Tip of my tongue like the barrel of a gun (gun), yeah
Better late than never Is the feeling of forever
Till a cemetery sound when the ball drops down
[Pre-Chorus: Ryder Houston]
Come on, guy, there's somethin' right
Somethin' 'bout the way you wanna ride
It's such a fine line
You never learn, it's so divine
Caught up on the way you wear your hair
And your face in this lighting
Take a little look at me right now
Take a little piece of me right now
I’ll be yours forever and ever and ever
[Chorus 2: Ryder Houston & Voix in the Dark]
To each his own, it's a parade, a shade of stone
Neither wrath nor punishment
Every man to each his own, a parade, a shade of stone
Neither wrath nor punishment
To each his own, it's a parade, a shade of stone
Neither wrath nor punishment (thy kingdom come)
(Thy will be done like...)
Every man to each his own, a parade, a shade of stone
Neither wrath nor punishment (thy kingdom come)
(Thy will be done like...)
[Outro: Ryder Houston]
Qu'est-ce que c'est?

L'entendez-vous?
Bien sûr que oui
Il a toujours été là
Il sera toujours là
Pour toujours
Et toujours

Ryder Harrison Houston is an American filmmaker and musician from Dallas, Texas. As much as his evocative sound dotes on
alternative pop acts Depeche Mode, Garbage, and even Madonna at her most controversial, his inky discography remains adhered to a certain groovy allusion to chopped-and-screwed electronica with his spidery vocals weaving clichés of lust and rock ‘n’ roll menace anew....more
